Hi, my name is Victor Nicollet, and I own this website. I no longer wish to stay silent in the fight for freedom of communication and computation, and for an open internet. I recognize that such freedom may be abused. I have myself experienced the chilling effects of piracy when it put a financial end to my dreams of independent game development. I have myself experienced the distress caused by rampant online slander. I expect such abuses to be forbidden, punished and prevented to the best of our ability. I recognize that the current technical and legal environment makes it hard to punish and prevent such abuse. I agree that we should do something about this by changing the technology and changing the laws. Yet, the benefits we have consistently reaped from a free, open and uncensored internet over the last decade alone greatly outweight the price we have paid for it. Any improvements we make should not threaten those benefits. Therefore, I am convinced that: Any legal or technical changes MUST reliably preserve the benefits of a free, open and uncensored internet. They SHOULD NOT follow a private agenda with no genuine interest in the greater virtual good. Those changes MUST be thoroughly examined and vetted by people who are recognized to be competent on this topic. They SHOULD NOT be unilaterally drafted and applied by computer-illiterate decision-makers. Should anyone obtain, by force or by law, powers to regulate our ability to compute and communicate, we MUST ensure that any abuse of those powers is forbidden, prevented and punshed. This is sadly not the case. It is time to stand up and fight. http://wastedcode.com/freedom/
